Are you operating a site with legacy equipment? This can present many challenges, such as designating equipment as a “SIL device” without any basis. Or, perhaps you're utilising equipment that pre-dates the Functional Safety Standards BS EN 61508 and BS EN 61511. Don't worry, you don't have to "rip out" the equipment and install new ones - all you need to do is provide a demonstration of the suitability of the current equipment.
BS EN 61508 and BS EN 61511 do not mandate the use of "SIL certificated equipment". Even if the equipment is not SIL rated, it could still be used as a safety instrumented function. In such cases, sites must demonstrate its suitability to meet the required safety functions. Moreover, the principle of as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) suggests that implementing a SIL system may not always be necessary if a better risk reduction options exists or if it is deemed to be grossly disproportionate. This means that based on the risk assessment, SIL systems may not always be the most appropriate course of action.
Our Independent Functional Safety Consultants can help you assess your risk and determine the most appropriate course of action. We are committed to providing our clients with the best possible solutions to ensure the safety of their operations.
