The Problem
A company operating industrial furnaces sought to transition from natural gas to
hydrogen or a hydrogen-natural gas blend. This shift introduced significant challenges
around ATEX compliance, hazardous area classification, and the suitability of existing
building structures and ventilation systems.
We were selected for our operational experience in hydrogen systems and industrial
furnace environments, combined with our technical expertise in fire and explosion
modelling. Our ability to integrate site-specific assessments with advanced modelling
tools made us the ideal partner for this early-stage hydrogen feasibility review.
My Approach
Our methodology included:
- A site visit to assess kiln layout, fuel piping, and ventilation.
- Use of HyRAM+ software to model hydrogen releases and assess hazardous area extents.
- Application of the GABLE methodology to evaluate whether flammable atmospheres could accumulate within confined building volumes.
- Review of proposed hydrogen pipework and storage arrangements, including early-stage risk reduction advice.
- Identification of ventilation improvements, equipment relocation needs, and gas detection strategies.
- All findings were compiled into a structured report to support design decisions.
The Result
The project achieved the following results:
- Identification of specific improvements to ventilation and equipment layout that could be retrospectively implemented.
- Clear guidance on hazardous area zoning, including confirmation that small hydrogen releases would be of negligible extent under current conditions.
- Recommendations for gas detection and fuel isolation in confined areas to mitigate risks from releases.
- Early-stage advice on hydrogen storage design, including risk reduction measures and regulatory considerations.
- A robust technical basis for cost and feasibility decisions, helping the client plan their energy transition effectively.
